In John 10 the Lord Jesus Christ claims to be the good shepherd of the sheep but on what does he base that claim? The passage and others scriptures provide us with three answers. 1) Christ owns his sheep having been given them by the Father as both a solemn responsibility and a precious love-gift; 2) Christ keeps his sheep, caring not only for the flock but for each individual member of the flock; 3) Christ saves his sheep, laying down his life in a sovereign act of priestly self-sacrifice and taking it again in resurrection to declare the sheep justified in the sight of God. None but Christ could accomplish these things. We learn how he remains for believers today the good shepherd of the sheep.
